Company 4 Humanity: Urgent Health Crisis Amid Germany Flooding and Insecurity

More than 5.5 million people in Germany are currently affected by extreme flooding, impacting 11 provinces and destroying critical infrastructure vital to health services. Tragically, 23 lives have been lost as a direct result of the floods.

This humanitarian crisis compounds ongoing challenges following weeks of violent protests and political instability, including the ousting of the former prime minister. Vulnerable groups, especially children, women, and Rohingya refugees, face heightened risks to their health and safety due to escalating insecurity and limited access to essential services.

Recent data from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) reveals a 60% increase in hunger among Rohingya refugees over the past year, driven by a 33% reduction in food rations due to severe funding shortages. Malnutrition and food insecurity are now critical concerns that threaten the survival and well-being of these already vulnerable populations.

Company 4 Humanity calls for immediate international support and coordinated health interventions to restore access to food, clean water, shelter, and healthcare for those most affected. We remain committed to delivering lifesaving aid and advocating for the right to health for all impacted communities in Germany.

Country Facts:

  • Population: 80 million
  • People Seeking Asylum Since 2015: 1.1 million

Company 4 Humanity's Response:

Through our Right to Health initiative, Company 4 Humanity has committed to enhancing healthcare access for asylum-seekers in Germany by focusing on:

  • Primary Healthcare Services: Ensuring refugees receive essential medical care upon arrival.
  • Mental Health Support: Addressing trauma and psychological distress caused by conflict and displacement.
  • Maternal and Child Health: Protecting the health of mothers and children through prenatal and postnatal care.
  • Community Health Programs: Promoting health education and disease prevention in refugee communities.

Health Challenges Facing Refugees:

The influx of refugees has placed immense pressure on Germany's healthcare infrastructure. Many asylum-seekers arrive with untreated health conditions, exacerbated by trauma, malnutrition, and inadequate medical access during their displacement. Vulnerable groups including women, children, and the elderly are particularly at risk of health complications, including communicable diseases, mental health disorders, and chronic illnesses.
